# Background settings

Detailed controls for color, gradient, and image backgrounds.

This page explains background settings in detail.

## [Background modes](/content/docs/editing/backgrounds#background-modes/index.html)

| Mode | Primary use |
|----------|---------------------------------------------|

| `image` | Art/photo backdrop behind the screenshot |

Background can be toggled on or off without discarding your last configuration.

## [What to know](/content/docs/editing/backgrounds#what-to-know/index.html)

- Background effects apply behind your screenshot, not to the screenshot pixels themselves.
- Image adjustment controls are only available when image background mode is active.
- Gradient stop count is limited to keep editing predictable.

### [If a background looks muddy](/content/docs/editing/backgrounds#if-a-background-looks-muddy/index.html)

Reduce blur first, then lower saturation, then adjust brightness. This is usually faster than rebuilding the whole gradient or changing frame settings.
